A very special “thank you” to Marleah Denkenberg

 

A very special “thank you” goes to Marleah Denkenberg from the Rochester/Elmira Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association.  She gave a very informative presentation about the basics of Alzheimer’s Disease at the Alzheimer’s Awareness Brunch in Hornell, New York this past Saturday.  Marleah and Rosemarie Oakman (founder of the Alzheimer’s Glass and Iron Project), are show here with glass plates made by artist Jon Moreano.  They are based off a painting made by an elderly individual living at McClaury Manor in Hornell, NY.

 

Career Chat by Alzheimer's Glass and Iron projects founder

If you are in the Alfred University area, the Alzheimer's Glass and Iron projects founder Rorsemarie Oakman, will be giving a career chat at the Terra Cotta Coffee House on Tuesday April 14th at 4:30pm. The event is hosted by the Career Development Center at Alfred University.

Coffee and cookies will be provided.

Spring into Spring

This watercolor painting created by an elderly woman living with Alzheimer ’s disease in Beacon, New York reminded the artist of two Easter eggs in a field. The elderly artist was looking at images of two different sculptures located at Salem Art Works in Salem, New York as inspiration for the painting.

Every Easter week the Alzheimer’s Glass and Iron project takes a break from our normal watercolor painting and non-toxic clay activates to paint Easter Eggs with elderly in local nursing homes.

Free Alzheimer's Awareness Brunch- Beacon, NY

On May 15th the Alzheimer’s Glass and Iron project along with the Elant at Fishkill will be hosting a free educational brunch that will focus on Alzheimer’s Awareness. The Hudson Valley New York Alzheimer’s Association will be presenting the panel, "Basics of Memory Loss," after which the Alzheimer’s Glass and Iron project will give a brief informational talk about the project and show examples of artwork made by elderly at the Elant in Fishkill along with Glass and Iron sculptures based off the work which will all be donated to the nursing home.

The event accommodates all family members. Elderly attendees suffering with Alzheimer’s and Dementia will be invited to paint with members of the Alzheimer’s Glass and Iron team while caregivers take part in informational panels lead by the Alzheimer’s Association.

2015 LARAC Funding

On March 22nd the Alzheimer's Glass and Iron project's founder Rosemarie Oakman attended the LARAC Grant Ceremony in Glens Falls New York, to speak about the program and what the received 2015 grant funding would be used for. Funding makes it possible to provide art materials to volunteer with elderly in Washington and Saratoga Counties, as well as the sculptures made by Glass and Iron artists for the Alzheimer's Glass and Iron project at Salem Art Works. Watercolor painting based off a sculpture by Coral Lambert

During watercolor painting sessions with elderly individuals who have Alzheimer's and Dementia, the facilitators of the Alzheimer's Glass and Iron project reference images of metal and glass sculptures. In early stages of Alzheimer's Disease the paintings are often very representational of the sculptures shown. Below is an example of a sculpture created by Coral Lambert at Salem Art Works and the painting based off of it by a local elderly women with early stages of Alzheimer's Disease.
