Below is an example of a sculpture created by Zac Ward at Salem Art Works and the painting based off of it by a local elderly women with later stages of Alzheimer's Disease. As inspiration for watercolor painting classes members of the Alzheimer's Glass and Iron project reference sculptures found at Salem Art Works.

2015 Stickers

We are thrilled about the arrival of over a thousand stickers with the 2015 Alzheimer’s Glass and Iron Logo Design!! Stickers will be given out at upcoming Alzheimer’s Awareness Brunches in Hornell, NY on the morning of Saturday April 18th and Beacon, NY on the morning of May 15th. At the Alfred University Glass Olympics on April 11th in Alfred, New York as well as the HeFeStus Iron Pour in Beacon, New York on May 25th. Stickers will also be available all summer long at the Salem Art Work's Visitors center!!

Free Alzheimer's Awareness Brunch - Hornell

If you are in the Hornell, Alfred, Southern Tier or Rochester Area on Saturday April 18th, please try and attend our free Alzheimer's Awareness Brunch. The Alzheimer's Association will be presenting a shortened version of the Basics of Alzheimer's Disease while a free brunch is served. The Alzheimer's Glass and Iron project will be donating over a dozen sculptures made by Alfred University students based off of paintings by residents of McCauly Manor Assisted Living Facilities. Please come out to see the artwork, increase you knowledge of the disease and enjoy a Belgian waffle!!

On April 18th the Alzheimer’s Glass and Iron project along with the Mcauly Manor will be hosting a free educational brunch that will focus on Alzheimer’s Awareness. The Rochester Alzheimer’s Association will be presenting the presentation, "Basics of Memory Loss," after which the Alzheimer’s Glass and Iron project will give a brief informational talk about the project and show examples of artwork made by elderly at the Mcauly Manor along with Glass and Iron sculptures based off the work which will all be donated to the nursing home. Brunch and drinks will be served.

The event accommodates all family members. Elderly attendees suffering with Alzheimer’s and Dementia will be invited to paint with members of the Alzheimer’s Glass and Iron team while caregivers take part in informational panels lead by the Alzheimer’s Association.

2015 Logo Design

The Alzheimer's Glass and Iron Project is thrilled about our new 2015 logo created by graphic design artist Emily Brooks! Look out for sticker and t-shirt giveaways featuring the logo at The National Conference on Cast Iron Art in Birmingham, Alabama this March and The Glass Art Society Conference in San Jose, California this June. T-Shirts and Stickers will also be available at the Salem Art Works visitors center. T-shirts and stickers are also available to anyone interested on request. Iron Sculptures Designed by Elderly Suffering with Alzheimer's Disease.

In 2014 the Alzheimer's Glass and Iron project cast over 40 iron sculptures designed by elderly individuals suffering with Alzheimer's and Dementia. Elderly sculpt using a non toxic air drying clay. Members of the Alzheimer's Glass and Iron team then make a rubber mold of selected sculptures, so multiples can be made in wax. The wax sculptures are put into a sand mold and melted out. After the wax in the sand mold is melted out, the negative space is filled with molten cast iron. The iron sculptures are given time to cool down and are then cleaned up. When the sculptures are finished they are given back to the nursing home or the families of the elderly sculptors.
