Nursing Home Visits

(Weekly) Around Washington and Surrounding Counties

 Members of the Alzheimer’s Glass and Iron Team (certified by the Alzheimer’s Association) will lead watercolor painting and sculpture activities throughout Washington County. These programs are not centered around having a complete art pieces when finished, but to cognitively stimulate the imagination of the elderly and create positive memories. Basic of Memory Loss given by the Alzheimer’s Association

10-11am Bancroft Library in Salem NY, Tuesday the 12^th of August

Alzheimer’s Association outreach and programs coordinator will be giving a presentation about Alzheimer’s and Dementia. The presentation will cover warning signs, types of dementia, how Alzheimer’s affects the brain, causes and risk factors, stages of the disease and hope for the future.

Presentation at the Salem Community Room

7:00-7:45 Salem Court House, Salem NY, Wednesday the 13^th of August

 In this slideshow presentation we will explain the Alzheimer’s Glass and Iron project, as well as upcoming activities for caregivers and children. We will focus on the mission of the project and how we will further be developing ideas and concept during our time at Salem Art Works.

Children’s Scratch Block Activity

11:30-12:30 Greenwich Library: Wednesday August 13^th            

2:00-3:00  Bancroft Library: Thursday August 14^th                   

TBA ( More times and location throughout middle to late September)

In this children’s activity being held at multiple libraries throughout Washington County NY, the Alzheimer’s volunteer team will be reading the Children’s Book “What’s Happening to Grandpa?” by Maria Shiver, supplied by the Alzheimer’s Association. We will then have a group discussion about memory, while enjoying a snack. The children will be given a relief scratch block made out of sand that they can carve into. We ask that the children represent something of their own memory in the scratch block. The scratch blocks will be poured in iron on August 16^th as part of an iron pour going on at Salem Art Works. The children will be able to watch their art turned into iron and pick it up on site that day. Or pick up the iron art from the library the following week

 

Presentation at the Argyle Nursing Home

2:00 Nursing Home in Argyle – Monday August 11^th

This presentation will address an Alzheimer’s support group. In this slideshow presentation we will explain the Alzheimer’s Glass and Iron project as well as upcoming activities for caregivers and children happening at Salem Art Works and other locations within our community.

Iron Pours

( August 16^th  &October 4^th) Saturdays

Molten Iron by 1:30pm, Salem Art Works, Salem NY

At the Alzheimer’s Iron Pours, sculptures will be cast by artist based off paintings created by the elderly. Sculptures created by the elderly during nursing home visits will also be turned into cast iron through sand molding. Additionally relief blocks will be carved by Grandchildren affected by Alzheimer’s Disease, who will create their own artwork based off of memory. Cast Iron art will be created by artists working at Salem Art Works as well as guest artists of the Alzheimer’s Glass and Iron project. All chemicals will be covered by the project. (artists are currently responsible for their own sand fees).

 

Alzheimer’s Association Memories in the Making Certification Training

TBA* Sometime in September

Salem Art Works, Salem NY

During this four hour certification participants will learn about Alzheimer’s and Dementia and take away the skills to facilitate watercolor painting sessions in assisted living communities and nursing homes of their own choosing. The first two hours will be spent learning about the disease. The second two hours will consist of hands on training that deals with problem solving through role play.

“Memories in the Making®, introduced in 1988, is a signature art program of the Alzheimer’s Association Orange County Chapter. It is a unique program allowing persons with Alzheimer’s disease or other dementia to express themselves through art. “

Alzheimer’s Glass Blow Slots

TBA - September

During Alzheimer’s Glass blow slots artist will create sculptures based off paintings created by the elderly. Additionally time will be spent making products for the Alzheimer’s Glass and Iron initiative, proceeds raised will go back into raising awareness about Alzheimer’s disease as well as sustaining art supplies in local nursing homes.

 

*Caregiver Event*

We are hoping to work with an adult day care facility in Washington County to give caregivers of elderly suffering with Alzheimer’s and Dementia a day off. The Alzheimer’s Glass and Iron project will sponsor a free art activity and host a light lunch at Salem Art Works. We want to show the caregivers we care about them. Gift bags will be provided full of products to pamper our guests.

*Glass Blowing Demo*

 TBA  (Hopefully during the Intercollegiate Iron Pour)

Guests of Salem Art Works are invited to attend a live glass blowing demonstration by Haley Jelinek and Elise Betrus, independent artists at Salem Art Works. During the demo we invite the community into the hot shop for some light refreshments as well as to raise hope and awareness. The artists will start off with a watercolor painting and use different glass blowing techniques that will result in colorful sculpture.

TBA (Hopefully during the Intercollegiate Iron Pour?)

Opening – at Salem Art Works or at a site in the surrounding community

*Best case scenario – opening the weekend of or before the Intercollegiate and remaining up until the first week of October and second Alzheimer’s Iron Pour. This gallery show will contain watercolors made by the elderly alongside sculptures made by artists at Salem Art Works. Documentation of our time at Salem Art Works will also be included.

*Alzheimer’s Glass and Iron- Tours of Salem Art Works*

TBA On site at Salem Art Works and at local nursing homes

This program is inspired by Meet Me at the MoMa and ‘Here and Now’ by the Hyde Collection. This project will allow individuals with early stages of Alzheimer’s to tour Salem Art Works and talk to artists on site about the work they see. The dialogue will inspire imagination and allow the elderly to cognitively engage without a dependence on their memory while looking at each new sculpture. Additionally for later stages of Alzheimer’s images of Salem Art Works will be brought into nursing homes as a catalyst for conversation.
